Purpose
The User Interface Committee will engage users in the nine societal benefit areas in the development, implementation, and use of a sustained GEOSS that provides the data and information required by user groups on national, regional and global scales. The User Interface Committee has a specific goal to address cross-cutting issues by coordinating user communities of practice, ensuring continuity and avoiding duplication.
Wind Energy Community of Practice leads the way in developing renewable energy requirements for GEOSS.
The proposal to form the Wind Energy CP was reviewed and approved by the GEO User Interface Committee. Under the guidance of Mark Ahlstrom and Charlotte Hasager, an international team is being formed. Since the desire for wind energy is global, but the implementation is site and regionally specific, a broad international representation is needed to provide a balanced requriements document for GEOSS. Wind Energy Community of Practice (WECP)
The objective of the Wind Energy Community of Practice (WECP) is to support GEOSS outcomes related to the application of Earth observation data and information toward advancing the siting, forecasting, integration and operation of wind energy. The wind energy community is interested not only in the energy component, but also in the weather and climate benefit areas. Some in the wind energy community are very involved with boundary layer meteorology (weather forecasting, topography, and land use data) and climate change.
The Wind Energy CP will directly contribute to the goals of the energy benefit area of GEOSS for improved management of energy resources. Specifically, “GEOSS outcomes in the energy area will support: environmentally responsible and equitable energy management; better matching of supply and demand of energy; reduction of risks to energy infrastructure; more accurate inventories of greenhouse gases and pollutants; and a better understanding of renewable energy potential.”
The overall focus of our WECP will be on defining how to realize the benefits to wind energy that GEO is offering - "delivering on GEOSS".

The GEO User Requirements Approach to Achieving Societal Benefits
The objective of the User Interface Committee is to enable GEO to address in a systematic, targeted, focused and comprehensive way the needs and concerns of a broad range of user communities in developing and developed countries, across issues and trans-disciplinary needs, with a particular focus on fostering new or less organized communities.
